England Kick Off Tonight… and the Heat Is Set to Return
Hot weather and Legionella control are back in the spotlight this week. England kick off their World Cup match tonight at 5pm, and while many of us will be hoping for a win, the Met Office is also forecasting another spell of hot weather over the weekend, with temperatures expected to climb into the high 20s and around 30°C in some areas early next week.
For facilities managers, estates teams and anyone responsible for building water systems, rising temperatures are a reminder to check that your Legionella control measures are still working effectively.
Hot Weather and Legionella Control – Why It Matters
Legionella control in hot weather becomes increasingly important as outdoor temperatures rise. Cold water systems can absorb heat from surrounding pipework, roof spaces and plant rooms, making it more difficult to keep stored and distributed cold water below the recommended 20°C. If water remains warm and stagnant, it creates conditions that can encourage Legionella bacteria to grow.
This doesn’t mean every system becomes unsafe during a heatwave, but it does mean routine monitoring becomes even more important.
Simple Checks During Hot Weather
As another warm spell approaches, now is a good opportunity to review your hot weather and Legionella control procedures.
Things worth checking include:
- Cold water temperatures remain below 20°C.
- Little-used taps and showers are flushed regularly.
- Cold water storage tanks are clean, insulated and in good condition.
- Temperature monitoring records are up to date.
- Any issues identified during routine monitoring are investigated promptly.
Small checks carried out now can help prevent much bigger problems later in the summer.
Stay Ahead of the Heat
Summer weather always brings extra challenges for water hygiene. Whether you manage a school, care home, hotel, leisure facility, office or commercial premises, Legionella control in hot weather should remain part of your routine maintenance programme.
If you need support with Legionella risk assessments, temperature monitoring, water hygiene services, cold water storage tank inspections or training, our experienced team is here to help.
